COMMANDER:

Hello again, come on down and see our new ceiling. Gone are the smoke stained tiles. It looks great. We were able to use Gaming funds to pay for it.

Friday Oct. 8th from 6-8pm it's the LEGION CHARCOAL GRILLED STEAK DINNER with baked potato, mushrooms, dinner roll and SALAD BAR $9.00.

Sunday, October 10th it's the LEGION FAMILY STEAK AND EGG BREAKFAST with American fries, toast, juice and coffee $6.00.

Some memorable dates: Oct. 12th (2000) the suicide bombing attack against the USS Cole. Seventeen sailors were killed. This attack was seen as the precursor to 9-11-2001. Oct. 13th (1775) the US Navy was established. On October 19th (1781) British General Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, making us a free nation. On Oct. 23rd (1944) the battle of Leyte Gulf off the Philippines was fought. It is considered the largest naval battle of modern history and the first use of Kamikaze aircraft in WW11. Oct. 24th (1945) is the official beginning of the United Nations.

Saturday Nov. 6th is the EARLY BIRD MEMBERSHIP PRIME RIB DINNER. You must have your 2011 dues paid to attend, so if you haven’t renewed yet you’ve got 5 weeks to get it done. This is a RESERVATION DINNER ONLY for members and their spouse. If no spouse a member can bring a guest but their meal must be paid for. Auxiliary and SAL are welcome. There are two seating’s; 5:30 and 7pm. You must be signed up by Nov. 2nd.

In closing lets not forget our troops in harms way. They need our continued support. May the "FORCE" be with them.

 Thank you for your support.

Commander,
George Jansen

AUXILIARY:

Hello Everyone,
We had our first meeting after our summer hiatus and it was a busy one!  The three recipients that were sponsored for Girls State came to speak to us of their experience.  It was exciting to hear what they learned, how much they all truly enjoyed their time there and how thankful and honored they all were for the chance to be a part of Girls State.  I believe their words enlightened all of us.
We will be hosting a Past Presidents Luncheon honoring Kerri Anderson on October 16th.  Social hour beginning at 10:30 AM with a brunch to follow at 11:30.  Cost is $6.00 which will include: egg bake, fruit, toast, coffee and juice.  Please sign up if you plan to attend, (there will be a sign up sheet on the Auxiliary board) or call Sharon if you cannot make it in to sign up.   Please join us, I look forward to seeing you there!
Sunday, October 17th our Pancake Breakfast will resume...with a new item!  There will be a choice of pancakes or French toast, with eggs and sausage for $6.00.  Breakfast hours are 9 AM to Noon.  Come in, get a great breakfast and stay for the Viking game!
The kitchen will now have food available during Saturday Bingo.  We are looking for volunteers to waitress on these days.  There is a sign up sheet on the Legion board.  The hours are from 12:30 to 5 PM; volunteer will receive drink tickets and earn tips.
Mark your calendars; November 6th is the Early Bird Dinner.  There are two seating times (5:30 and 7:00) for one of the best grilled prime rib dinners around!  Early paying members and their spouses eat for free; guests are welcome too for a reasonable price.  The sign up sheet is on the Legion board, this is a reservation only dinner - don’t miss it!
Last but not least, we are holding a Food Drive for the veteran’s home.  Please help us stock their shelves!  There are many times that their shelves are bare, this should never happen and we can all be a part of making sure it never happens again.
Please remember to check the Legion and Auxiliary board for upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.  The fall season is looking to be a busy one, don’t miss your opportunity to enjoy all the exciting events at the Chester Bird!
As always, please remember our troops and their families.
Peace,
Auxiliary President
Jackie Miller

S.A.L.:

Greetings from the Son’s!  Meetings resumed in September.  Remember meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.  You are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Members that attend the meeting receive 2 drink tickets.  Our next meeting will be on Wednesday October 6th.

We’ve donated $200.00 to the Disabled Veteran’s Deer Hunt up at Camp Ripley. The Hunt will take place on October 5th, 6th & 7th and this year there will be 60 veterans hunting.  My brother, Joe and I will be returning this year to help prepare meals for all that attend.

On Saturday November 13th at 2:00 p.m., as in years past, a group of us go to a rehabilitation center and a nursing home in Golden Valley to put on a small service for Veterans Day and sing a few songs.  I am looking for a piano player to play This Land Is Your Land, The Star Spangled Banner, God Bless America and America the Beautiful for the residents.  They really love to sing along.  If you can join us please give me a call at 612-618-3330.  It will leave you with that warm fuzzy feeling.

Membership is going very well this year.  We are at 39 paid members.  We only need 81 more to reach another “ALL TIME HIGH.”  If you have not paid your dues please do soon so we can be the first Squadron in the 10th District to reach an “ALL TIME HIGH!”  There will be an Early Bird Membership Dinner on Saturday November 6th.    Make reservations ASAP as the cutoff date is Nov. 2nd.  Reserve your seat at either 5:30 or 7:00.  Thanks for paying your dues early.  There will be a cost for none members.  Call 763-377-4252 to sign up.

Mark your calendar!!  The Son’s Annual Turkey Bingo will be held on Friday November 19th.  This year we will have more bingo cards.  Watch this column in the November Bird Call for all the details.

On Friday Oct. 17th we will serve an Oktoberfest dinner.  There will be a special on pints of Guinness Beer.  We will serve bratwurst from a small butcher shop in New Germany that was voted the best in its class, slow simmered in green, red and yellow peppers, onions and beer then grilled to perfection.  Served with potato salad, French fries and a condiments bar with assorted mustards, onions, peppers and warm sauerkraut, $5.00 per order.  A second bratwurst can be purchased for $2.50.  We will also be serving Warm Jumbo Pretzels with choices of dipping sauces for $2.00.  Served from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  Hope to see you there!
