February 2010 Newsletter

COMMANDER:

Hello again, I hope the New Year has been good for you. Our new website is up and running and if you would like to receive the newsletter by E-mail go to www.chesterbird.com and find the prompt at the top of the page. If you opt for the E-mail you will no longer receive the newsletter by postal delivery. You'll get it quicker and it will save us printing and postal costs.

At the January Post meeting Pete Nelson and Craig Hartman were elected to three year terms on the Holding Board. My thanks to outgoing Holding Board Members; Tom Skalberg and Ron Tanner for their work and input on the board these past three years.

Its Girl Scout cookie time again, come on down to the Post and get your order in. We would like to surpass the 717 boxes we sent overseas last year.

The Legion hosts Taco Thursdays for February and March. Sign up at the Commanders Board.
On Friday February 12th from 6-8pm it's the LEGION CHARCOAL GRILLED STEAK DINNER with baked potato, mushrooms, dinner roll and SALAD BAR $9.00.

On Sunday February 14th from 9-1pm it's the LEGION FAMILY STEAK AND EGG BREAKFAST with American fries, toast, juice and coffee $6.00.

The February 20th Mardi Gras Party will not take place this year. I'm hoping we'll get this going next year.

In closing lets not forget our troops in harms way they need our continued support. May the "FORCE" be with them.

Thank you for your support.

Commander,
George Jansen

AUXILIARY:

Greetings:
A big thank you to all the volunteers who signed up to help for Taco Thursday’s, your help was much appreciated!
Reminder: The Auxiliary will be having a Pancake and Sausage Breakfast on the 21st of February. $6.00 will buy you all the pancakes you can eat!
In January the Auxiliary had an open seat on the Holding Board. Bev Jennings was nominated for that position. Thank you Bev!
Mark your calendars, Auxiliary meetings are the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM. Please plan on attending, we need your support!

Peace to all!
Auxiliary President,
Kerri Anderson

FIRST VICE COMMANDER:

Welcome to a new year. The current membership is at 372 with 2 new members signing up last week we are at 90% of our goal of 410. We still have about 40 current members that have not paid their dues for 2010. The new membership year starts on May 1st so I hope you can all see your way to renew your membership. With the surge of troops going into Afghanistan they need the support the Legion provides more than ever and we need the funds to help them.

The Post "Cookies for Troops" drive is starting this month. Last year we were able to send over 700 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and with new deployments we would like to increase that this year. So, please consider buying a few boxes to send over to them. If you want to help we will have a sign up sheet on the Commanders Bulletin board. If you would rather buy them and bring them to the post its OK too.  If you can not make it down to the Post just send a check made to Legion Post #523 and make a notation " Cookies for Troops" The cookies are $3.50 per box.

God Bless Our Troops and Their Families
First Vice Commander

SERVICE OFFICER:

VETERANS, TROOPS CAN ALWAYS SALUTE
A change to Section 9 of the U.S. Flag Code written into the Defense Authorization Act this year now gives veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces the authority to render a salute to the flag, whether or not they are in uniform or wearing identifying veteran apparel such as an American Legion cap.
All others present should remove any headwear, face the flag and place their right hand over their heart.
Headwear should be held to the left shoulder, leaving the right hand over the heart. These acts are to be conducted anytime there is a hoisting or lowering of the U.S. Flag, whenever it passes. Citizens of foreign countries should stand at attention.

Service Officer,
Tom Skalberg P.C.
